Mesic Hammock

Mesic Hammock

We are thrilled and honored to have been chosen to construct this unique custom home, designed by Halflants + Pichette - Studio For Modern Architecture. Our clients are a retired chairman of a large, 3rd-generation commercial-contracting firm in the Midwest and his wife, an active Fortune 500 business consultant. Set in a live oak hammock, the house is designed for a contractor who asked for exposed, raw construction. The palette of materials is limited to cor-ten weathering steel, glass and exposed precast concrete.

The house is designed as a landscape-viewing device. Sliding glass walls and expansive terraces help blur the distinction between interior and exterior. Wide concrete beams maximize the cantilevers over the site and the creek. One such beam serves as the entry bridge into the house. The house retains a small footprint to help preserve the 2-acre site.

While the site will remain in its natural state without formal lawns, the roof will be planted with drought-tolerant grass.
